King’s Court

King’s Court

Betty and Alan were tired of their furniture being simply functional—they wanted more. They were looking for a warm, inviting living room with stature and impact. As we were talking about options and styles, Alan’s eyes landed on a tall Coromandel Screen designed by Maitland Smith that we had on display. “That’s it!” he proclaimed. “Can we use this in our living room or dining room?” Of course we could, and we did. It looks beautiful on their large living room wall and the temple scenes spark many conversations with a fireplace and a lovely garden view. We chose to create an arrangement for comfortable conversation by flanking the fireplace with two Marge Carson Sofas. The soft textured gold fabric is alluring but practical and we chose to use warm hues of persimmon and burgundy in embroidered patterns as accents. The white wood fireplace mantel was completely transformed with carved moldings and deep espresso tones in faux finishing.

The dining room was also transformed. We moved their antique heirloom display cabinet onto the focal wall and created symmetry by adding a pair of sconces. Guests and family can all enjoy each other while seated around this large oval burl table with an egg and dart carved apron. The very comfortable dining chairs encourage long conversations after dining. Instead of keeping the bank of cabinets looking like cabinets, we chose to paint them to correlate with the fireplace. We then added a black granite top and an emblem to each cabinet door. This area now looks like a beautifully accented piece of furniture, in a room fit for a king.
